The Opus 2 is a light, good-looking grinder for espresso and filter coffee, and it's cheap enough to leave money for the machine. It's a sensible first grinder for a machine with pressurised baskets or an entry-level model. If you get serious about espresso and want very fine control, you'll probably outgrow it.

At a glance

What's good

  • It grinds fine enough for espresso and coarse enough for a cafetière, and a dosing cup for 54mm and 58mm portafilters comes in the box.
  • It's made for grinding one weighed dose at a time, and very little coffee gets left inside.
  • At 2.3kg and 27cm tall, it's lighter and smaller than most grinders.
  • Besides black and white, it comes in red, green and sesame with wood details.

Worth knowing

  • At espresso settings it has less fine control than grinders made only for espresso.
  • The body is plastic.
  • It's a new model, so there aren't many long-term owner reports yet.
  • It grinds into a cup, so you tip the grounds into the portafilter yourself.

Burrs and grinding

Conical and flat burrs both make excellent espresso. The difference in taste is small, and how well the grinder is made counts for more.
Conical
Larger burrs usually grind faster and more evenly, though the design of the burrs counts as much as their size.

Espresso needs very fine adjustment. Stepless lets you choose any setting; stepped grinders work if the steps are small enough.
Stepless
Can also grind coarse enough for filter, cafetière or pour-over.
