How we recommend
A short account of where our facts come from, how the quiz chooses, and what we won't do.

What this site is
We recommend home espresso equipment for people in the UK: machines first, then grinders to go with them. We cover what’s on sale here, priced in pounds, from retailers you can buy from today.
We’re researchers, not a test lab. Unless a product page says otherwise, we haven’t used the product ourselves, and we won’t write as though we have.
Where the facts come from
- Specifications come from the manufacturer’s own UK pages, spec sheets and manuals. When a figure isn’t published, or sources disagree, we use the most reliable figure we can find and keep a note of it. We correct it when better information turns up.
- Strengths and weaknesses come from the specifications themselves and from patterns in long-term owner reports: the things people mention after a year, not after a day.
- Prices and stock come from retailers’ own product feeds, checked every night. Every price shows the date it was last checked. Amazon doesn’t let us show its prices without its own data service, so for Amazon we show a link with no price.
How the quiz chooses
There’s no AI deciding anything when you take the quiz. It follows a fixed, published set of rules, and the same answers always give the same results.
- Hard requirements. Some answers rule products out. Ask for milk drinks and machines without a steam wand drop out. Say you have a tight counter and anything over 25cm wide goes.
- Preferences. Other answers add or take away points. Wanting things simple favours machines that are easy to learn on and keep the water at a consistent temperature. Wanting full control favours adjustable pre-infusion and separate boilers.
- Budget. Your budget covers the whole setup, so the machine gets 55 to 75% of it, leaving room for a grinder. If the machine has a grinder built in, or you already own one, the whole budget goes on the machine.
- Alternatives. Alongside the top pick we show a cheaper option and a stretch option, but only if they still suit you well. Each comes with what you’d gain or give up.
- Grinders. Grinders are priced relative to the machine, so an expensive machine never gets a bargain-bin grinder. Where we can, we match the look: the same colour first, then the same style, then a neutral finish.
- When nothing fits. If your requirements rule everything out, we loosen the least important one, then the next, and tell you exactly what we changed.
Every recommendation lists the reasons that put it there. The full rules are below.
What we won’t do
- Take payment to include a product or move it up a list.
- Publish star ratings, scores or reviews we haven’t earned.
- Invent urgency: no countdowns and no “only two left”.
- Recommend things that aren’t fit for the job. Every grinder we list can grind fine enough for espresso.
How we make money
When you buy through our links, the retailer pays us a commission. It doesn’t change the price you pay, and it doesn’t change what we recommend: the rules above don’t know which retailers pay more. There’s more on our affiliate disclosure page.
Corrections
If a spec, price or claim looks wrong, tell us and we’ll check it and correct it. Our email address is at the bottom of this page.

Budget
Brackets: £0 to £400; £400 to £800; £800 to £1,500; over £1,500. The main product gets 55% to 75% of it, or all of it when has built-in grinder, or when you answered "Yes, one that does espresso", or when you answered "No, I'll use pre-ground for now".

- Counter space

- What you drink
- The budget, by up to 30%
Pair it with a grinder
Price bands, relative to the price of the main product:
- Good: 25% to 55% of its price, and at least £140.
- Better: 45% to 80% of its price, and at least £190.
- Best: 70% to 120% of its price, and at least £300.
Looks: +3 for the same colour, +2 for the same style, +1 for a neutral finish. Anything that takes the whole setup over your budget loses 5 points.
We skip this step when has built-in grinder, or when you answered "Yes, one that does espresso".
- +1 if Grind adjustment is Stepless.
- +0.5 if has grinds into the portafilter.
- +1.5 if you answered "Full control" or "Learn as I go" and has built for single dosing.
- +1.5 if you answered "Keep it simple" and Dosing control is Timed or By weight.
- +1 if you answered "Several" and tagged hands off.
- +1 if you answered "Tight" and Width up to 14cm.
