Mahlkönig makes the grinders in most cafés, and the X54 is its home model. It grinds timed doses into a portafilter holder, so you can press a button and leave it, and a swappable front piece sets it up for filter. Beans are kept in a hopper, which makes it a poor fit for switching coffees every day.

Worth knowing
- Beans are fed from a hopper, so after changing the grind you'll need to run some coffee through and throw it away.
- It's rated for 10 seconds of grinding followed by 50 seconds' rest, which is fine for home use but wouldn't cope in a café.
- It's 38cm tall with the standard hopper, so check it fits under your cupboards.
- The app connection doesn't add much to the basics.
