A lot of people learn espresso on this machine. It puts a grinder and an espresso machine with a pressure gauge in one box, for less than you'd pay for the two separately. The built-in grinder is the part you're most likely to outgrow, and you can't swap it for a better one.

At a glance
At a glanceWhat's good
- The grinder is built in and grinds straight into the portafilter, so you don't need a second appliance on the worktop.
- The pressure gauge on the front shows whether your grind and dose are in the right range, which helps while you're learning.
- There's a separate hot-water outlet for americanos.
- Both pressurised and non-pressurised baskets come with it, and the pressurised ones are more forgiving while you learn.
Worth knowing
- The grinder has 16 settings, and for light roasts you may need to adjust the inner burr to get fine enough.
- After making a shot, you wait for its single heater to get hot enough for steam.
- The grinder doses by time, and the amount it grinds in that time changes as beans age. Check the dose on scales now and then.
- With the bean hopper on top it's about 40cm tall, so check it fits under your wall cupboards.
