The Appartamento is a traditional heat-exchanger machine, where one large boiler heats both the steam and the brewing water, so you can make a shot and froth milk at the same time. We think it's the best-looking machine of this type, and it's compact for one. Without electronic temperature control, you run off a little water before each shot to bring the temperature down, and it takes about 25 minutes to warm up.

At a glance

What's good

  • The body is polished stainless steel with round side panels in white or copper, or you can have it in black with white panels (the Serie Nera).
  • Its 1.8-litre boiler lets you brew and steam at the same time.
  • It has an E61 group head, a long-established café design that soaks the coffee gently before full pressure.
  • At 27cm wide, it's small for a machine with an E61 group.

Worth knowing

  • Without electronic temperature control, you need to run off some water before each shot to get the temperature right.
  • Its one gauge shows steam pressure, so you can't see the brew pressure while a shot runs.
  • It takes around 25 minutes to warm up fully.
  • It weighs 20kg, which makes it hard to move for cleaning, and it can't be plumbed into your water supply.
