The Mara X is a compact heat-exchanger machine, meaning one large boiler heats both the steam and the brewing water, so you can make a shot and froth milk at the same time. Most machines of this type need some water run off before each shot to cool them, and this one avoids that by controlling the brew temperature at the group head. Lelit says it needs 24 minutes to warm up.

At a glance

What's good

  • You can brew and steam at the same time, with enough steam for several milk drinks in a row.
  • Because temperature is controlled at the group head, shots stay consistent without the cooling flush most heat-exchanger machines need.
  • At 22.5cm wide it's narrow for this type of machine, and it has gauges for both brew and steam pressure.
  • It comes with three IMS baskets, including one that holds 18–21g of coffee.

Worth knowing

  • Lelit quotes 24 minutes to warm up. Many owners put it on a smart plug that switches it on before they get up.
  • It's over 50cm deep and needs a deep worktop.
  • There's no shot timer, so you'll need to time shots yourself.
  • It only takes non-pressurised baskets and needs a good espresso grinder to go with it.
