The Classic has barely changed since 1991, and it's still a good machine to learn on and keep for years. It comes with pressurised baskets for pre-ground coffee and non-pressurised ones for when you buy a grinder, and it takes the same 58mm parts as café machines. There's no electronic temperature control (PID), so getting consistent shots takes some practice.

At a glance
At a glanceWhat's good
- It has a brass group head and a 58mm portafilter, the size café machines use, so almost any aftermarket basket or tamper will fit.
- Both kinds of basket come in the box. Use the pressurised ones with pre-ground coffee, and switch when you buy a grinder.
- The manual steam wand has a two-hole tip and lets you learn to froth milk by hand.
- It comes in nine colours, including brushed steel, cherry red, midnight blue and sunshine yellow.
Worth knowing
- Without a PID, the temperature varies between shots. Owners work around it with a routine of flushing and timing called temperature surfing.
- After making a shot you wait for the small boiler to heat up for steam.
- There's only about 7cm of space under the portafilter, which rules out tall cups.
- Frothing milk is slower than on a machine with a separate steam boiler.

- Single boiler
- A grinder built into the machine. Saves space and money, but you can't upgrade it separately.

- Rotary pumps are quieter and can be plumbed in. Vibration pumps are smaller and cheaper.
- Vibration
- Electronic control that keeps the water at the same temperature for every shot, so the coffee tastes more consistent.
- No
- Wets the coffee gently before full pressure, which makes shots more forgiving.
