The Dedica Duo is a low-cost, very narrow machine for making espresso from pre-ground coffee. It only takes pressurised baskets, which are designed to get a decent shot out of supermarket coffee, so it's easy to use but the coffee won't get much better than that. The manual steam wand lets you learn to froth milk for lattes.

At a glance

What's good

  • It's 14.9cm wide, which is about as narrow as espresso machines get.
  • It heats up in about 40 seconds.
  • With some practice, the manual steam wand can make smooth milk for a latte or flat white.
  • You can choose between three brew temperatures, and there's a cold-brew mode too.

Worth knowing

  • It comes with pressurised baskets only. If you buy a good grinder later, you'll also need to buy non-pressurised baskets before you see much improvement.
  • The water tank holds 1.1 litres, so you'll refill it often.
  • After making a shot, you wait for it to heat up again before you can steam milk.
  • The 51mm portafilter (the handle that holds the coffee) is a small size, so fewer aftermarket baskets and tampers fit it.
